Before Foundations

Ephesians 1:3-10

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

Do you appreciate that the LORD had intentions for you in Him even before He laid the ‘foundation of the world’? Image—you were on the mind, in the heart of God, before He started creating the world!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world…1

WOW! Yes, God’s intention for each of us has been ‘Blessing’ since before the beginning. His intent was never anything less. And that blessing was intended to be ‘with every spiritual blessing’ in His realm, where His will is done.

Then He created us and we sinned against Him. Deliberately, definitively, with dedication to ourselves. But, not only did He have intentions from before the foundation, He had goals for us,

…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 2

This ‘predestined’ 3 isn’t about who would be saved and who wouldn’t but about who those in relationship with the LORD are intended to be: ‘that we should be holy and blameless before Him’ that it was ‘in love He determined to adopt us to Himself as sons in Jesus.’ All of these possibilities were set in motion by the LORD before anything of the world began. Paul then concludes with the bounty of all that God put into the design even before we sinned. God did not leave anything to ‘chance’ in making not only the original relationship with Him but the way to redeem the possibility after we would sin. His design was and is Complete:

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth in him. 4

Isn’t it glorious that the LORD has prepared and executed such a complete purpose to fulfill His will for us, now and for eternity!
