The Bible is quite straightforward in naming the ‘sins which so easily beset us’ —those which tend to be gross and yet more common than we like to admit. While we might beg off the guilt of sexual immorality, all impurity or even covetousness, we won’t get very far before honesty with ourselves will convict us of the dark secrets of the soul. There are those thoughts or the things said only in private which nail us to our personal cross. We are guilty. We can try to talk our way out ‘as not as bad as’ but we know in our heart that we have done the unmentioned.
Of course there is good reason to be in denial for so many of us recognize the consequences of ‘those things that others do’ and which we don’t want to see in our own life. But can you truly separate yourself from ‘covetousness,’ that wanting what someone else has and you perceive you need and are entitled to having? How do you get around wanting ‘it’ and inheriting the Kingdom of God? Which do you put the most heart into today? Have you become convinced by the wisdom of the age that you can have it all?
Choices, judgments, decisions, options, possibilities—while once you naturally chose the darkness because you were committed to doing it your way, now as one living in the Light, you must live walking in the Light and forego the ways of darkness.
Most of us who have had a vigorous relationship with sin preferred to practice the depths in the darkness of being unknown. Only in the modern age has sin which once was ‘dark secrets’ come to be popularized and embraced by cultures. Yet, for the disciples of Jesus, those committed to full relationship with the LORD, darkness must be illuminated for what it is and we live in the Light, walking in the Light, agreeing with the LORD. He makes it possible. And desirable. Forevermore.
