God’s Way More Accurately

Acts 18:24-28

Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

Have you known someone who seemed to know all about God but come to find out over time that they are missing something, don’t know all the fullness of the LORD? Ephesus was one of Paul’s early churches in Turkey and thrived at a Roman crossroads of Asia Minor. Several teaching disciples furthered the work of God and others gravitated there.

While Apollos was a dynamic speaker and knew the Scriptures, he didn’t know the ‘whole’ story and only had reference to John the Baptist baptism of repentance without knowing the rest of what was necessary in Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It was a start but not complete. Enter a couple who knew more fully. Notice that they do not rebuke him for what he doesn’t know but rather ‘take him aside and explain the way of God more accurately’ so that his life and teaching will be complete.

And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. 2

Apollos became more fully equipped for God’s further use of him through the gentle ministry of the Christian couple we meet several times in Acts and the epistles. Their ministry was not a rebuke but a revealing and helped enable one of the early orators of the Church age. There is even a distinct possibility that Apollos may be the unknown writer of the book of Hebrews.

Have you taken the opportunity to quietly speak the full truth into the life of a true seeker of the LORD, to more fully, more accurately be used of the Holy Spirit to teach others the Way of Jesus?
