Qualified
Colossians 1:9-14
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Good News! You are Qualified. Paul writes to the disciples in Colosse that his prayer for them has been and continues to be for who they are becoming in the LORD.
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 1
Look at all the assets that are going into these disciples:
- filled with the knowledge of His will with spiritual wisdom and understanding
- walking in a manner worthy of the LORD fully pleasing to Him
- bearing fruit in every good workings
- increasing in the knowledge of God
- strengthened with all the power that is His glorious might
- having all endurance, patience and with joy
- thankful to the Father God
‘Qualified’ includes the meaning of being equipped with adequate assets to perform all the duties one is responsible to fulfill. Paul is saying the Father God has certified you as sharing in the necessities given to those ‘in the inheritance of the saints in light.’ Inheritance is meaningless without the death of the One leaving the inheritance but this specifies it is directed to the ‘saints in light.’ You may not be comfortable being designated a saint because it sounds so lofty but all who are true disciples in Jesus are saints, holy ones, distinct, set apart. Disciples are by definition to be in the Light as He is the Light, to be committed to His Way and embracing all those assets mentioned above. We are no longer what we once were for salvation is rooted in turning away from sin and turning toward the committed life in the image of Jesus.
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 2
So, are you going to live as one qualified to share in the inheritance Jesus desires to give you? It is yours for the living in Him.
